Logline At a resort in Patagonia, a filmmaker in crisis reflects in an interview on his inability to find truth in the beauty that surrounds him. Geniko was developed during an international residency organized by Playlab and held in San Martín de los Andes, Patagonia, in December 2025. The program brought together emerging filmmakers selected from around the world, each tasked with creating a short film under the mentorship of Paolo Sorrentino.

Like every selected participant, I was asked to conceive and produce a fiction film from scratch in just ten days, while navigating an unfamiliar language, culture, and environment.

Director’s statement

I started making films to bring order to chaos. For years, that is exactly what cinema represented for me: a way of controlling reality, giving it shape, creating images capable of containing what would otherwise slip away. Over time, that need for control evolved into a method, a language, an identity. But it also became a form of comfort. Perhaps too much so.

During the residency in Patagonia, I found myself, for the first time, fully experiencing a state of genuine creative disorder. I realized I was unable to complete a fiction short based on a local story and real people. To do so, I would have had to simplify that reality or appropriate it more than I was willing to. Instead of paralyzing me, that impasse became the starting point for another film.

Genikó emerged from that very deadlock.

Not as an attempt to overcome a crisis, but to remain within it.

Through an ironic and self-reflexive narrative, the film portrays a filmmaker incapable of finding anything authentic to tell. Set in a breathtaking Patagonian resort, immersed in an atmosphere of sweet idleness, the protagonist confronts the short circuit between his ideal of artistic integrity and the reality of his own gaze.

Visually, I adopted a detached and rigorous approach: long, static shots observing a polished world that feels distant and emotionally inaccessible. In this way, the film’s form itself seeks to embody that distance, questioning the relationship between image, truth, and the power of the gaze.
