Director’s statement

I was eight years old when, in the midst of my parents’ divorce, my grandma, who was also my closest playmate, was diagnosed with cancer. In a family already emotionally adrift, I seemed unwilling to face what was happening. I preferred to retreat into the films and cartoons that would soon spark my passion for cinema. For years, imagination first as a viewer, then as a filmmaker,  became my shield.

With this film, I wanted to reflect on how fiction can become, even in the most unexpected ways, an emotional bridge to reality. Drawing from the complex relationship I had with my mother as a child, I created a cartoon that the young protagonist, Lorenzo, watches with the same wide-eyed wonder I once had for Dragon Ball: “Rando”, a sci-fi western anime filled with larger-than-life characters and pompous dialogue, a perfect refuge from a cold, uncomfortable reality.

That reality takes shape in the brutalist outskirts of Sorgane, a working-class neighborhood on the edge of Florence, the city where I grew up. Its raw concrete buildings loom like a silent prison, holding back the characters’ unspoken emotions. It is within the emotional incommunicability between Lorenzo and his mother, Silvia, torn between the need for tenderness and the weight of a situation she cannot bear, that I chose to confront the theme of loss.

Silvia closely resembles my mother: vulnerable, determinated, and forced to carry a family dynamic far too heavy for her shoulders. Lorenzo, in turn, is a version of myself: rebellious, sensitive, and with a heart ready to embrace change if only he can learn to listen to it. The world around them is inhabited by grotesque figures, seemingly devoid of tenderness, who try in vain to ease the child’s pain but are unable to find the right language. And yet, it is precisely through the exaggerated lines of the cartoon that someone manages with irony and human warmth to give their final encounter a different meaning.

My aim is to create an emotionally immersive experience for the viewer, one that restores a sense of empathy, often smothered by our inability to express what we feel. That, ultimately, is the essence of my cinema: a language built on silence and ambiguity, where the unspoken and a glance carry more weight than words; where the narrative unfolds through a storyboard-driven visual grammar inspired by the clarity of comic books; and where the grotesque, paired with intelligent irony, can, if only for a moment, ease the drama of solitude.
